Since 1983, The Chicago Diner has been making people believe in something previously thought impossible. When co-owners Mickey Hornick and “Chef Jo” Kaucher opened a vegan dining spot, they were met with eye rolls. Family members and loan officers alike told the partners their idea of creating a diner with an idyllic Americana vibe–but without the meat–was impossible. More than 40 years later, the partners are still making believers out of those who doubt them–that a vegan diner can taste better than any other restaurant in Chicago.

The awards The Chicago Diner has won, and the media mentions it has earned, are as long as its history–and its fans. Numerous MICHELIN mentions, TLC’s “Best Food Ever,” “The Top 25 Vegetarian Restaurants in the World” by The Daily Mail, The "Best Vegetarian Restaurant in Chicago 2022" by Chicago Reader, and dozens more. The restaurant would likely have even more of these accolades–had the recognition of the restaurant industry begun at its current scale when the restaurant opened its doors.
